Pioneer Cabin was originally built by the Sun Valley Company in the summer of 1937 as a ski touring hut. Today, the cabin is a perpetual observer and guardian of the western front of the Pioneer Range near Sun Valley, resting at an elevation of about 9,500 feet.

A quick trip to Sun Valley Idaho for a weekend to visit a friend and enjoy some time in the mountains. The trail that was suggested was the Pioneer Cabin Trail, I was told it had wonderful views, not many hikers, and would be a good challenge for the legs. Living at sea level and then starting a hike at 2,100m (6,900 feet) above seal level 12 hours after arriving was going to be fun, I knew I would be huffing and puffing to get air.  🙂

Pioneer Cabin Trail

Distance 12.36km (7.68 miles)

Elevation Change 854m (2803 feet)

This was a great hike, I rarely saw anyone else and although I was hiking solo (I know, not the best thing to do) I never felt worried for my safety. I was aware that there was a solo hiker lost in the area for over a week – his body was recovered a few weeks later at the bottom of a ridge.

The well defined trail winds up through a wonderful forested area with plenty of chipmunks to keep you distracted from the constant climb. Eventually you reach a clearing and may come across herds of sheep, along with their protective dogs (these are big dogs that will fight off hungry predators but not aggressive to people). Once you reach the Pioneer Cabin you will be rewarded with wonderful views and more chipmunks looking for handouts (please don’t feed the wildlife, keep wildlife wild).

I hope you have enjoyed the pictures from this trip and get out there and enjoy a trail in your area.

Cheers, Nigel
